Castle Coch

During the Christmas holiday, we went to Castle Coch. We were aware that this was not a real castle, but it was not the first time we had seen locations that were mislabeled but enjoyable to visit (Scotney?). Castle Coch is controlled by CADW, the Welsh government department in charge of historical sites. If you've read some of my evaluations on castles like Beaumaris, Conwy, or Raglan, you'll know that I'm not happy with how CADW manages their castles, especially when compared to English Heritage.We traveled to Luton Airport and walked out seeking a car, which I ordered through an online cab service named company. I noticed a man wearing trousers and a flat cap on his head, clutching my nametag in his palm. I approached him and introduced myself; he smiled and accepted my luggage.

He then placed the bags in the cab's boot, and we proceeded about our business. When you arrive at Castell Coch, you'll notice the massive sparkling towers that tower high above a drawbridge that allows you to cross the threshold and enter the fairytale castle. Then, ascend the spiral staircases and examine each of the opulent staterooms to imagine what it was like for the Marquess and Marchioness Bute to reside here in the summer.It'll feel like a maze of staircases, exhibition rooms, kitchens, and towers, but don't leave until you've seen the most significant areas. Since Norman times, there has been a castle on the site of Castell Coch to guard the expanding town of Cardiff before it became a city in 1081.Gilbert de Clare, who captured this region around Caerphilly from local Welsh lords in the 13th century, reconstructed it. However, upon his death, the facility was abandoned and left to rot. By the 18th century, the Bute family had purchased the lands and ruin. This meant that as a youngster in 1848, John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, inherited the land and castle.

Bute was one of the richest men in Britain when he reached adulthood. He held various properties in South Wales after marrying Gwendolen Fitzalan-Howard. Later, he directed his top architect to investigate the castle remains to determine what might be done with the land, In 1868, Bute commissioned Burges to rebuild Castell Coch in the Gothic Revival style. It would be a once-in-a-lifetime commission! Burges envisioned a fantastical and grandiose medieval fantasy castle with some contemporary Gothic modifications.

It had two large conical towers, a gatehouse, and a banqueting hall, as well as central heating and certain Victorian luxuries. Bute appeared to forsake the project and property after Burges died unexpectedly in 1881. Apart from serving as an army barracks during World War I, the property saw little action. Cadw finally purchased and safeguarded it, and we may now visit it as a tourist destination. It has been in countless television programs and is frequently chosen as the public's favorite building in Wales! Yes, you may visit the castle, but there is also something to discover in the village of Tongwynlais and the lovely Fforest Fawr that surrounds it.
