Scotney Castle

Another castle, another day! I was back in the lovely Kent countryside, this time touring Scotney Castle and Gardens. The earliest elements of the castle date back to the 14th century and sit on a moat, filled with fish, ducks, and lilypads. We went to Scotney Castle during the Christmas holiday, so we couldn't appreciate the grounds, which are undoubtedly at their best in the spring and summer. Even on a chilly day in early January, they looked stunning.I phoned company and booked a cab with them after one of my friends suggested it to me. After a few moments, company dispatched a driver to the airport. The driver welcomed me and helped me load my bags into the trunk of the cab, and we were on our way to the castle. We got to the castle after driving around and stopping a few times.

At Scotney, there is a clear path to take: start at the new house and work your way down to the old home. The initial glimpse of the historic castle encircled by its moat is a wonderful moment and sight to see. The old castle is mostly deserted, and there aren't even any volunteers to tell you about it, which is frustrating, especially in the cold!The historic castle has seen many rulers and battles and even has a powerful "priest hole" constructed into its walls to serve as a hiding spot for priests. Catholics were persecuted by law in England during Elizabeth I's reign, and a priest was concealed by Scotney's proprietors for seven years in the early 16th century. It has had various owners since the 14th century, including relatives of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

It was most recently owned and passed down through numerous generations by the Hussey family. The architect Antony Salvin designed it in the 19th century for Edward Hussey ll, and it is positioned on a hill with sweeping views down to the mediaeval castle ruins. Salvin and Hussey purposefully converted the ancient castle into "ruins" to serve as the focal point of the freshly planted grounds from the "manor house."When the estate's owner, Christopher Hussey, died in 1970, the National Trust took over as stewards.

His widow remained at the residence until 2007. Following that, it was opened to the public, allowing people to explore Scotney Castle on a day trip to Kent. You have a good collection of artefacts from the castle's recent past, including a fascinating letter from Edward VIII's wife, Wallis Simpson, and another from Margaret Thatcher to the last remaining Hussey family member. The "New Castle" appears to be in transition, and as a result, it does not communicate any important tale. We went in January 2018, so maybe things will change in the future. The Scotney Manor House is made of sandstone mined on the estate. The quarry is now a garden, replete with the imprint of a dinosaur's footprint discovered during building. To summarise, Scotney Castle is a lovely destination to spend a day.
